    Scotland 2023 – Day 6

Today we drove west via Sterling and Glen Etive to Fort William. But first we had to find a jet wash in Musselburgh. It’s a coastal town with a lot of seagulls. They seem to have a grudge against sports cars. But luckily the nearest petrol station had a jet wash where we could clean up the mess!

Once the cars were clean, we headed towards Sterling and the castle there. The GPS did show us one direction and the signs another one. For once it turned out that the GPS was right! There were quite a lot of tourists there. So, it took some time to get to the parking area. But once there, it was very well organized. The castle is in good condition and has clearly been restored recently. We’ve read about Sterling castle and also watched several programs on Historyhit and Youtube. It was interesting to finally visit it. One thing we missed when comparing to other castles we’ve been to is the furniture and decorations. There is very limited amounts of furniture inside the rooms. But nevertheless it’s worth a visit if you are interested in history.

After the visit to Sterling castle, we drove a couple of kilometers to the Wallace monument. It was built during the 19th century in honour to William Wallace, also known as Braveheart. We didn’t go inside the tower, but the view from outside is great. You also get a good view of Sterling castle across the valley. After walking up and fown the hill, we had lunch at the visitor center.

The next stop was Glencoe Mountain Resort. Here we met up with the other two in our little group. Time for a cup of coffee and some apple pie.

Then it was time to drive on the famous Glen Etive road. Also known as Skyfall road. This is were the well known scene in the Bond movie Skyfall was shot. Where Bond and M returns to his childhood home. We didn’t manage to find the exact location where Bond parked his DB5. But the scenery is stunningly beautiful. It’s a single track road with pockets for overtaking. Most other cars managed to handle this. But we did encounter a Karen in a Kia who simply refused to reverse to the pocket just behind her. The road is approx 19 km and ends at Loch Etive. There is a small car park. Then you have to drive back on the same road again. It’s well worth it for the scenery.

The last part of the drive to Fort William also came with some great views of the highlands. The hotel however turned out to be a disapointment. But more about that tomorrow.

    Scotland 2023 – Day 5

Today we took the train to Edinburgh. It’s a 7 minute journey from Musselburgh to the ciry center. The weather forecast had indicated some heavy showers. So, we came prepared with both umbrellas and waterproof jackets. But we only had a couple of very brief ones. Which could be managed by jumping into the nearest shop.

It’s very convenient and cheap to use the local train service. The downside is that there is only one train per hour

As we had expected there were a lot of tourist in Edinburgh this time of the year. So much so that we skipped visiting the castle. We left the old town and went to visit the National Gallery instead. There is a very impressive collection of paintings and some statues. Well worth a visit.

We had lunch at Whiski Rooms & Bar. This is also well worth a visit. We went for haggis with Ardbeg and chicken breast with Glenmorangie respectively. It was delicious, and something we will try at home. Maybe not making haggis, but the chicken dish in combinstion with whiskey. They also arrange various whiskey tastings. But that will have to wait for another time.

Haggis served with a glas of Ardbeg Uigeadail

We paid a visit to National Museum of Scotland after the lunch. It’s a modern exhibition and by such, a bit confusing. Mixing artifacts from the Picts with rockets and planes, china, steam engines, motorcycles and rocking chairs. Maybe it makes sense if you visit multiple times or attend a guided tour.

Now we are back at the hotel in Musselburgh. Waiting for the other two guys to return and hear about their experiences of the day.

Tomorrow we’ll head on to Fort William. Via Sterling castle and Loch Etive for that James Bond moment.

  • Scotland 2023 – Day 4

    Scotland 2023 – Day 4

Today we woke up on the ferry when it was approaching Newcastle. We decided not to eat breakfast onboard. Instead we just grabbed a cappuchino and a croissant to get us going. After refilling the tank and buying some sandwiches plus orange juice, we drove north.

Sunny morning on the North sea

First stop was Warkworth castle. It sits quite spectacular on a hill top. Most of it is in a derelict state. But parts of the Great tower is preserved. It’s worth a visit if you happen to pass by. A189 and A1068 are nicer to drive than A1.

    The gate is still standing
    Model of the castle
    The Great tower

We then drove on to Lindisfarne and Holy island. It’s a well known destination for us vikings! Our ancestors raided the monastry in the ninth century… The road to the island is only accessable at low tide. It makes for a remarkable drive close to the sea level.

Waiting for the road to open

Despite some rain showers, we went for a walk to Lindisfarne castle as well as to the later church ruins and still standing church of St Mary. Nice views but somewhat of a tourist trap. Also, a lot of tourists at a small area. So, now we can tick that off the list.

    12th century church at Lindisfarne
    St. Aidan of Lindisfarne

We then drove on to Duns and Jim Clark Motorsport Museum. As you can see, it’s a very small museum. Only two cars on display unfortunately. It’s nice to have been there, but we can’t really recommend it unless you really are into F1.

The last part of today’s journey gave us some glimps of Scotland. Unfortunately there were no way that we could park and take some photos. But nevertheless some lovely scenery while getting closer to Edinburgh. Our hotel is located in nearby Musselburgh. The hotel room is ok, albeit a bit worn. Since there was some sort of celebration going on in the hotel bar. We decided to go somewhere else to have dinner. After some 20 minutes walk, we found a seafood restaurant that was good.

Tomorrow we’ll be exploring Edinburgh. So, no driving tomorrow. Today we drove 303 km.

    Scotland 2023 – Day 3

The third day took us from Rotenburg to IJmuiden and the ferry to Newcastle. It had rained during the night. So, we started off with the roof up. The third car is now also with us. So, the fellowship is now complete.

We decided to stop in Groningen for lunch. The food at the News Café was good. But the service was very slow. We had planned to drive via Afsluitdijk. But when we had finished the lunch and filled up the tank, the time was running out.

We drove to the ferry via Amsterdam. It was an uneventful drive through a very flat landscape. We had to stop for a bridge that opened up to let some ships through to IJmeer. Now we are relaxing in the bar before going to get something to eat and go to bed.

    Scotland 2023 – Day 2

The second day has been all about transit. From Lund via Copenhagen and Rødby to Rotenburg. Normally when we go to UK, we go via Hoek van Holland and Harwich. That ferry departs late in the evening. So, it’s not a problem to drive directly to the harbour ftom the south of Sweden during one day. But this time we will take the ferry from Amsterdam to Newcastle. This one departs much earlier and we don’t want to risk missing it. Soft top down all day long and 35 degrees Celsius in Germany. Took some water to stay hydrated.

Some stau at the Autobahn around Hamburg (as usual). But otherwise an uneventful day. Breakfast at a service station in Denmark and lunch at another one in Germany. During the crossing between Rødby and Puttgarden, we saw some of the barges used to build the new tunnel. It’s planned to be ready in 2029. This time however we got a sports car friendly parking among the lorries on the lower deck. Wide lanes and no steep ramp to worry about.

The hotel is near A1 and the room looks good. A lot bigger than last night. Check-in was a bit messy when they couldn’t find our reservation. Lots of space on the parking area. We’ve driven 459 km today.

Tomorrow we will be driving to Amsterdam to catch the overnight ferry to Newcastle. That’s when the real adventure begins.

  • Scotland 2023 – Day 1

    Scotland 2023 – Day 1

First day of our trip to Scotland. This time we are only four people in three cars. Us in our new Mazda MX-5 and two friends in their Lotus Elise. Today we covered most of the transfer through Sweden, from Stockholm to Lund. In all 636 km out of which we drove 404 km with the soft top down. 26 degrees Celsius and mostly sunny. We made the first stop in Linköping to stretch out legs and visit ”Gamla Linköping”. This is an open air museum that consists of old buildings from Linköping and the surrounding areas. Some contains shops and work shops, some are being used as living quarters and some are transformed into exhibitions. There are also several cafes. Plus a farm with live animals, Valla gård.

After this, we met up with one of our friends at a cafe in Väderstad, just outside Mjölby. Here we had a late breakfast before continuing south. The cafe, called Väderstad Centralkonditori, is well worth a visit. The sandwiches and pastry are legendary. In the Summer, people are travelling from far and wide to visit the cafe.

The next stop was for lunch at Tabergstoppen. Just south of Jönköping and lake Vättern. The view was spectacular but the food was less exiting. A couple of soggy sandwiches that really can’t be recommended. But the road between Väderstad and Gränna is beautiful if you avoid the highway.

We then pressed on for the final leg of the day. The end destination was the university city of Lund. Here we are staying over night. Since we arrived in the afternoon. We managed to go for a walk in the city after checking in at the hotel. We had a really nice dinner at an italian restaurant, called Gattostretto. Now the cars have had a quick wash and the petrol tanks are filled up for tomorrow.

    Scotland 2023 plans

The 2023 tour is soon upon us. This year we’ll visit Scotland with a couple of friends. Newcastle, Edinburgh, Fort William, Skye and Inverness. On the way back home, we’ll also visit Tan Hill Inn and Hethel in England.

Lots of interesting things to do. We’ll only manage a few this time.

So, stay tuned for the coming blog updates. Starting July 8th

  • Swedish Lotus in the Alps & Dolomites 2022 – Day 12

Final day of this grand tour, transit through Sweden. The ferry from Rostock arrived in Trelleborg at 06:00. But we couldn’t get of the ferry until 07:00 since we were parked in a corner behind lorries. Since breakfast on ferries usually are quite bad, we decided to go to our old hometown Helsingborg. There we had breakfast at Fahlmans, an old café in the city center. There is also a sports car friendly garage nearby, Sundstorgsgaraget.

After refuelling, we drove north on the E4 through Småland and into Östergötland. Then it was time for lunch. We had discussed this with one other member of the group, who was driving in the same direction. So, we met at a well known café not far from Mjölby. In the small village of Väderstad you can find Centralkonditoriet. A café that dates back to 1912. People travel far to go there in the Summer. But on a Monday in September it’s calmer. It’s well worth a visit if you pass by. The E4 motorway passes about 10 minutes drive from Väderstad, just south of Mjölby.

After lunch, we drove all the way home. Which is north of Stockholm, in Åkersberga. In total we drove 676 km today. A rather uneventful day that finished off a very nice vacation with good friends. The next blog post will be a summary of the tour including highs and lows. Stay tuned for that. Also, comment or get in touch if you have any questions about the route and the places we’ve visited.

  • Swedish Lotus in the Alps & Dolomites 2022 – Day 11

Last day in Germany, driving from Dresden to Rostock. The ferry leaves at 10:30, so we were in no hurry. After breakfast we took a walk through the old town and along the river Elbe. There were both a Farmers market as well as a triathlon competition going on. So we couldn’t park the cars in front of the hotel again.

One member of the team came up with the great idea to visit Classic Remise in Berlin. So we stopped there for lunch and to admire the cars. The lunch was very expensive but the cars were interesting to see. So, I’d suggest that you eat elsewhere.

After Berlin, we drove straight to the ferry terminal. We are now waiting for the boarding to open and to get on the boat to Trelleborg for a nights sleep on the sea. We’ve driven 422 km today.

  • Swedish Lotus in the Alps & Dolomites 2022 – Day 10

We continue our journey north. Today we drove from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Dresden via Munich. We clocked 595 km on mostly Autobahn. It was rain and 10 degrees in the morning and the clouds were hanging low. Due to the weather, we decided to go to the BMW museum in Munich.

The building that houses BMW Welt is impressive. It’s a gigantic showroom of BMW cars and motorcycles plus MINI. There are several restaurants and a shop. Next to this is the BMW museum. This turned out to be a very confusing experience. The exhibition sits on several floors. It’s easy to miss a set of rooms. We were also confused by the fact that many modrls from the BMW timeline were missing. We’ve since learned that there is another BMW museum in Munich with more classic models.

After Munich, we headed towards Dresden via Nürnberg. Lot of traffic and heavy rain made it rather stressful. There were also several roadwotks going on. Driving to the hotel in central Dresden was a lot easier than in Berlin. We made some impression when we parked outside the hotel, us in the F-Type and two friends in the group that arrived at the same time in their two Lotus Evora.
